Inncontro 2025
In-between spaces in the context of migration
6th – 8th of November 2025 | Leokino Innsbruck
Inncontro – International Film Festival of Plurality invites audiences to engage in dialogue on (post-)migration, displacement, and exile — through international feature and documentary films as well as conversations that center the perspectives and agency of those who have migrated, live between multiple homes, have been forced to flee, experience racism, or are affected by current inhumane migration policies.
This year’s focus is titled “In-Between Spaces” and explores the complex, often contradictory experiences of living in-between.
Migration places people in in-between spaces — geographically, culturally, legally, and emotionally. Between departure and arrival, between languages, affiliations, expectations, and realities. These are not merely spaces of waiting or uncertainty, but also hold potential for reflection and transformation.
Four carefully selected films, one short film evening, a school screening for students aged 9 and above, and a range of wonderful collaborations invite audiences to explore these in-between spaces from diverse perspectives.
They open up visual and discursive spaces where stereotypes are questioned, ambivalent experiences made visible, and new ways of thinking become possible.
An extensive accompanying programme of talks, discussions, and educational formats rounds out the festival. It aims to provide opportunities for deep engagement with anti-racism, to foster critical dialogue, and to support collective learning around migration, displacement, and exile.

A cookbook on French cuisine, spurned by the Parisian bourgeoisie, ends up in the trash several times after a series of twists and turns—only to be fished out again by two Senegalese street sweepers. Only they, the supposedly uneducated migrants, recognize its true value. When they discover over forty different recipes for preparing rice alone, friends Bokolo and Mamadou are completely enthralled. They memorize the ingredients, study the various dishes of classic French cuisine, and transform themselves into true gourmets on a small scale. Their roommates can only laugh at the tiny hay cheese they bought at the market for a lot of money. But when their friend Bono falls seriously ill and needs money for his (final) journey home to Ivory Coast, their passion becomes an opportunity: participating in a cooking quiz show on television with the prospect of a large prize money gives them hope…

When asked about their career aspirations, 9-year-old Jamila says she would most like to
become a scientist, while her two friends Rachel and Faseeha, who are a few years older, would most like to become a ‘gangster’ and an actress and rapper, respectively. The three girls are participating in the Sisterqueens youth project, which Clara
Stella Hüneke’s documentary film has been following for four years. At the Berlin centre for young girls, MÄDEA, they talk about topics such as feminism, racism, discrimination and queer lifestyles – and vent their displeasure about gender inequality: Why, pray tell, is the boys‘ gym twice as big as theirs, and why should they have to listen to comments about how their ‘girl push-ups’ are worthless? With the help of social workers and rappers, they put their thoughts down on paper in song lyrics – and later on stage. The audience cheers them on, and so do we!

From this paradox, the film filters a humanistic indictment of the cynical domestic politics in a country of insurmountable (paper) mountains.

The three young Romani women Lala, Samanta and Zaga belong to the second generation of migrants. Although born in Italy, they are not recognised as citizens there. Often, there are no papers from their parents‘ home country, which they had to flee due to war. Without official documents, they are denied many rights in Italy
– for example, the right to housing and work, not to mention the right to equality: racism and discrimination shape their everyday lives. Lala is a mix of fiction and documentary. In the role of the fictional Lala, amateur actress Samanta embodies the fate of the real Zaga, whom the director met in a camp, a destitute underage mother who is in danger of losing her baby. However, the story pauses several times and the actors, who bring much of their own lives into the film through improvisation, step out of
their roles and exchange their own experiences as Romani women in Italy.

saturDAY 8TH OF NOVEMBER 2025 | 8 pm
‘Chàu mung… in Québec’ – this is how Vietnamese boat people were welcomed to the Canadian province in the 1970s, with winter clothing and a festive buffet. Equipped with a small starting allowance, French courses and Canadian sponsorships, their integration into society was to be made easier. Ru is the film adaptation of the autobiographical novel of the same name by Québec writer Kim Thúy. In the film, we experience the family’s escape story through the eyes of 10-year-old Tinh, who has to leave her best friend and beloved grandparents behind in Saigon to embark on the arduous journey to the West with her family. Like her later self as a celebrated star author, the girl is a keen observer: while the family curiously looks around their new apartment, Tinh’s downcast gaze reveals her pain at losing her homeland – long before she can use the French language as a vehicle for her feelings.
